Media and Communication Policy

The CMCS and CMCS fellows have undertaken research on media regulations, national and international media policy and governance structures, and information economies across media sectors and platforms.

For example, CMCS was a partner in the study Developing indicators for the independence and efficient functioning of audiovisual media services regulatory bodies (INDIREG), which was prepared for the European Commission's Information Society and Media Directorate-General. The study was conducted by the Hans-Bredow-Institut (Germany), the CMCS, the University of Leuven (Belgium), Cullen Int. (Belgium) and Perspective Associates (UK).

In response to the passage of a controversial set of media laws in Hungary in 2010, the CMCS conducted an Open Society Foundations-funded study called Hungarian Media Laws in Europe: An Assessment of the Consistency of Hungary's Media Laws with European Practices and Norms.

In 2010, CEU Press published the book Media Freedom and Pluralism - Media Policy Challenges in the Enlarged Europe, one of the many results of the CMCS-coordinated collaborative research network East of West: Setting a New Central and Eastern European Media Research Agenda.

The CMCS also collaborates with other institutions and organizations to support research on policy and governance issues. For example, the Center co-organized a workshop on media law and policy reform in the Middle East and Northern Africa, and in 2011 co-sponsored a regional conference by the ICANN-Studienkreis on internet governance.
